Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the letter `Indo-Pak. standoff' by Col. Riaz Jafri (retd.) from Pakistan (Sept. 23). Col. Jafri conveniently ignores the ground realities when he accuses India of massive troop deployment along its border with Pakistan. After all, what India has done is to strengthen its borders against infiltration from across the neighbouring country in exercise of its inalienable right of self-defence. To misinterpret it as ``Indian belligerence'' is unjust and untenable. Contrary to his perception, it is because of the utter lack of cooperation (towards our efforts) from Pakistan and its clandestine support for various anti-Indian terrorist outfits flourishing there, that infiltration and cross-border terrorism continue unabated. As far as the fallout of our ``fight against terrorism'' is concerned, it is a moot point whether we have lost heavily while Pakistan has gained substantially. His claim of Pakistan having played its cards admirably sounds hollow. He should train his guns on the leadership of his own country and advise it to create a favourable climate to end the Indo-Pakistan standoff. A.N.B. Pillai, Chennai
