Shed the `soft' image

Sir, — The gruesome attack on the Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar has proved that terrorism is spreading its tentacles throughout the nation. Whenever an incident takes place the Government issues a statement that India's patience is running out, but no effective action is initiated. Terrorists need to be dealt with with an iron hand. Mere rhetoric and statements would never help. Strengthening our intelligence network will help us to carry out ``surgical strikes'' on terrorists' camps and bases.

India should realise that it has to deal with terrorism on its own. Expecting help from the world community, especially the U.S. will prove to be a blunder. It should shed its image of being a ``soft State''.

Ashish S. Thakare,

Sir, — The terrorist attack on the temple has evoked expected reactions from the people in power. There are the oft-repeated remarks. We have been hearing these for many years from people in power whenever such carnages take place and nothing concrete has happened.

Our leaders do not want to talk to Pakistan unless cross-border terrorism is stopped. But what have we achieved by such an attitude? Have we minimised cross-border terrorism? In fact, terrorism is on the increase. What harm is there if we talk to Pakistan and try to find a solution to the perpetual problems? The Government's intelligence machinery, for which people's money is spent in crores, must act more efficiently to prevent such carnages. Also, it would have been commendable if they had caught the terrorists alive.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,
Salem
