Pak. among new non-permanent Council members

Washington Sept. 27. Germany, Spain, Pakistan, Chile and Angola will be the new non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council starting January 1, 2003.

They were elected for a two-year term by the General Assembly. The new members will be replacing Singapore, Mauritius, Ireland, Norway and Colombia.

They had been endorsed by the respective regional groups and there was no contest this time.

Of the 182 ballots for the two seats of the Asian and African group, Angola received 181 votes and Pakistan 172.

Chile takes the place of Colombia in the Latin American and Caribbean group and Germany and Spain replace Norway and Ireland in the West European and Other's group.
