John Major in sex scandal

By Hasan Suroor

LONDON: One of the best kept secrets of Britain's arcane political elite tumbled out of the cupboard on Saturday after it was revealed that the former Prime Minister, John Major, widely perceived as "dull and boring'', had a steaming four-year affair with a feisty party colleague and junior Minister in the Margaret Thatcher government, Edwina Currie (in the picture). The revelation, contained in Ms Curries' diaries published in The Times, was confirmed by Mr Major who described it as the most "shameful'' event of his life. He said his wife Norma knew about it and had long forgiven him. Ms Currie, now a divorcee and an occasional writer and broadcaster, said the "most hurtful'' thing was that she "wasn't even in the index'' of Mr Major's memoirs, though she denied that her disclosure was prompted by a desire for revenge. ``It is the one event in my life of which I am most ashamed and I have long feared it would be made public,'' Mr. Major said in a statement amid much tongue-wagging, especially from those who had been victims of his famous "back-to-basics'' philosophy which cost several of his ministers their job over their sexual peccadilloes.
