23 die in blast at Chechnya police headquarters

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW OCT. 11. A powerful explosion killed at least 23 people and wounded 18 at a police headquarters in the Chechen capital Grozny. Rescue workers picking through the rubble found several survivors and feared up the death toll could rise as about 100 Chechen policemen were inside the police precinct building when the blast ripped through it on Thursday evening.

Investigators at the scene found fragments of an explosive device equivalent to 30 kilograms of TNT that went off on the second floor of the four-storied building when the local police staff had gathered for a regular meeting. It was the biggest rebel attack in war-torn Chechnya since August when a helicopter carrying 155 troops was shot down near the Russian command headquarters in Grozny.

The rebels are increasingly targeting Chechens who cooperate with Russian authorities.
