Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to the article "Flexible contracts" (Oct. 10). The five ground rules suggested by P. V. Indiresan for settling the Cauvery dispute can form the basis for a meaningful exercise to find a lasting solution to the issue. Even though Karnataka's defiance of the Supreme Court order can be treated as a case of "contempt of court'' and the State proceeded against, what is immediately required is a solution. The successful defiance of the court order has already caused `damage' to a section of the farming community. In the situation, a supplementary order from the SC on the petition for orders against contempt of court, giving directions to the Centre to find a solution may not be out of place. R. P. S. Natarajan, Coimbatore, T.N. Sir, The day the Karnataka Chief Minister, S. M. Krishna, asserted, in complete defiance of the Supreme Court decree, that Karnataka would not release water to Tamil Nadu, the death knell for Indian democracy was sounded. The head of a Government himself openly defying the order of the highest court of the land is unprecedented in the annals of the country's history. It is all the more surprising the Centre has not uttered a word against this intransigence. N. Rengarajan, Chennai
