Rain abates in Kodagu

By Our Staff Correspondent

MADIKERI Oct. 15. Rain that lashed Kodagu in the last four days, flooding several vulnerable areas, abated on Tuesday. Surprise floods have caused extensive damage to paddy crops in Bhagamandala, Karadigodu, Napoklu, Dubare and other areas. The Bhagamandala-Aiyyangeri Road, which remained cut off, was reopened for traffic. A swollen Lakshmanateertha in Virajpet taluk too severed road links in the last couple of days. Landslips and uprooted trees have been cleared in many places. Vast stretches of paddy fields in the Bhagamandala region have come under the Cauvery waters causing losses to farmers. Talacauvery and Bhagamandala areas registered a record 180 mm rainfall in 12 hours on Saturday. Rain has come as great relief to the paddy crop, which was on the verge of getting damaged in many places in the district under the influence of the scorching sun.

The level in the Cauvery and its tributaries has risen, bringing cheers among farmers. In Madikeri town, the prospects of a grand Dasara celebration has brightened with the rainfall receding, though there have been occasional spells of drizzles since afternoon.
