The denial of party ticket to many senior leaders of the National Conference forced them contest as independents. For instance, the Udhampur district president, Aijaz Khan, contested from Gool Arnas and Gulabgarh as an independent. Both the seats were with the National Conference but it could retain only one. Similarly, Moulvi Abdul Rashid, representing the old guard in the party contested as an independent from Banihal and won comfortably. The decline in the Bharatiya Janata Party's strength from eight to one in the present Assembly is also being attributed to the rebels. For instance, in the Jammu East, Jammu West and Jammu Cantonment considered the BJP's stronghold votes were divided between the party and its rebels. The Congress also suffered losses at the hands of its rebels. The former Congressman, Ashwani Sharma, joined the Jammu State Morcha and won the border Bishnah Assembly segment.
