Dusserah celebrations low-key in Solapur

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI OCT. 15. After days of curfew and tension and sporadic violence today, Solapur celebrated Dusserah on a muted note with all public events — navratri processions, an RSS-sponsored rally and a fete to commemorate the conversion of Harijans into Dalits decades ago — cancelled at the behest of authorities.

Curfew was relaxed till noon amid tight security. People moved about buying their daily needs as well as requirements for festivities. But, sources in Solapur said, "they kept looking over their shoulders all the time.

It was peace with a touch of tension in the air", for, despite the curfew since Friday, there were incidents of violence and arson in some areas.
