Agitators surprise police

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI OCT. 15. About 4,000 activists of the Jamait Ulama-i-Hind, who have been staging a dharna at Jantar Mantar for the past several days, took the Delhi police by surprise today, when they gathered outside the Prime Minister's Race Course Road residence.

Police said the protesters, since October 3, had been permitted to come to Jantar Mantar from Nizamuddin via Mathura Road, Bhagwan Das Marg, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road and Tolstoy Marg.

However, they changed their route and gathered near the Prime Minister's residence on Kamal Ataturk Marg at around 10 a.m.

Police intercepted the agitators and after a brief discussion, 10 persons, including the party president, Maulana Mahmood Asad Madani, were allowed to meet officials at the Prime Minister's residence.

The Jamait Ulama-i-Hind members have been holding demonstrations at Jantar Mantar in support of their 13-point charter of demands, which include a ban on the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh.
