Tamil Nadu
By Our special Correspondent
The Commission, in a recent letter to G.K.Vasan, erstwhile president of the TMC, said it had taken on record the merger of the TMC (M) with the Indian National Congress. The party's erstwhile spokesperson, B.S. Gnanadesikan, talking to newsmen here today, said that in view of the Commission's letter, no individual or MLA would hereafter be allowed to use the name TMC (Moopanar). The Commission had also sent copies of the letter to the Chief Electoral Officers of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and the State Election Commissioner, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Gnanadesikan appealed to those MLAs, including D.Kumaradas, who had announced that they would continue to function as TMC MLAs, to merge with the Congress. The Speaker, K. Kalimuthu, not only recognised the merger based on certain letters he sought, but also allowed five rebel legislators to continue to function as MLAs of the `TMC', based on their written request. But he said he would await any EC ruling. Mr.Gnanadesikan said Mr.Vasan had also requested the EC to freeze the cycle symbol, which was allotted to the TMC. Meanwhile, the TNCC working president, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, has appealed to the Speaker to reconsider the decision to allow five MLAs, led by Dr. Kumaradas to function as TMC (Moopanar) group, in the light of the EC order. "So there is no party in the name of TMC," he noted. Mr. Elangovan said in a statement tonight that the Speaker should take a just decision following the EC order and Assembly rules.
