To clear the stocks, the Government has offered a discount of 45 per cent for sarees produced one year ago and 55 per cent for sarees produced two years ago. There are 23 co-operative societies and about 300 private parties engaged in weaving of sarees with an annual turnover of about Rs.250 crores. But in the last few years there has been a sudden slump in sales, mainly owing to recession and competition from mills, which produce sarees using imported silk with synthetic material and sell them at affordable prices. As part of promotion, the Handlooms and Tourism departments have organised a three-day `Silk Tourist Festival' from October 16 to 18. The Kancheepuram Collector, K.Rajaraman, said that there was good demand for Kancheepuram sarees in the domestic and international markets. The Handlooms department had set up an office here to check the genuineness of the silk and the quality of zari used. A Rs. 95 lakh-modern complex had been constructed in Kancheepuram town for display and sale of sarees, which would be inaugurated shortly.
