Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
The Tata Indica in which the victims were travelling was a total wreck. The bus driver and conductor were absconding, police claimed. The victims were identified as Mukhil Deka (29), Rakesh Surana (28) and Arunkumar Metha (31). According to police, they were proceeding to Mamallapuram from Chennai, while the State Transport Corporation bus was returning to Chennai from Pondicherry when the accident occurred. A mandatory investigation by the Road Safety Commissioner would reveal any safety flaw at the spot, including delay in medical help reaching the victims, but such legal requirements were not being complied with in the State, according to sources. The Neelangarai police are investigating.
