Thirtytwo animals, including cows and buffaloes that were loaded on the trucks were rescued in a miserable condition at Vysarpadi. "Three buffaloes had multiple fractures when we rescued them and most of the animals were in dire need of food ", said Antony Rubein, a PFA volunteer. Though the truck could only accommodate five or six animals, the vehicles were crammed with 16 animals each, said Dharmesh Shah, another volunteer. The volunteers, who were on their routine patrol at Vysarpadi, found the trucks carrying the cattle. They seized the vehicles with the help of the public and police. A case was registered against those transporting the animals under the Transport of Animals Act-1978. The cattle were being transported from Nasapet in Andhra Pradesh to a slaughterhouse at Pulianthope, said the Assistant Commissioner of Police, V. Palanisamy. The animals were bought for Rs. 2 lakhs by a group of 15 traders who were involved in the illegal transport of animals from other States. The PFA secretary, Shiranee Pereira, appealed for public support to deal with the problem, and said the volunteers could contact the organisation on the phone: 8236368 or 6441701. The rescued animals were taken to a shelter run by the PFA--Jaigopal Garodia Jeenendra Jeevdaya Kendra--at Athivakkam near Red Hills.
