Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Special Correspondent
The members of the sangha held a demonstration in front of the official residence of the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, today in this regard. Later, a delegation led by the General Secretary of the sangha, G. Byya Reddy, met the Horticulture Minister, M. Shivanna and discussed their problems. Mr. Shivanna assured the delegation that he would discuss the matter with senior officials of the Agriculture and Horticulture departments on Monday and take action. Mr. Byya Reddy told The Hindu that their major demand was for compensation, as potato growers had lost heavily since their crop was a total failure due to the substandard seeds supplied by a seed agency. He said the potato crop on about 3,000 acres, mainly in Bangalore Rural and Kolar districts, failed because of the use of substandard seeds. The farmers had invested about Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 35,000 on each acre. He said the sangha also demanded cancellation of the permit of the agency responsible for selling the substandard seeds and also action against the inspectors of the Agriculture and Horticulture departments for their failure to monitor the supply of seeds. Earlier, the sangha members took out a procession from Chiklalbagh to the residence of Mr. Krishna. Learning that Mr. Krishna had cancelled all his engagements, they went to the residence of Mr. Shivanna.
