Hamid Reza Kheradmand, Second Secretary, (Press), Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran, writes: Our embassy strongly denies the news report published under the title, "Suicide bombing may undercut U.S. plans" by Atul Aneja (The Hindu, October 23) regarding the possibility of Iran providing bases to the U.S. and Britain for operations against Iraq or for any other purpose. In this connection, we refer to our Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hamidreza Assefi's briefing wherein he called such reports as "sheer lies", stressing that this would basically contradict Teheran's policies. Dr. Assefi said any such move from the Islamic Republic was totally rejected, and that it flew in the face of Iran's declared policies, and the principles governing Iranian diplomacy. He refreshed Iran's stance to prevent resorting to force in settling world issues, stressing that any step toward that end must be taken through the United Nations.
