Ramamurthy dedicated his life to workers' welfare: CM

CHENNAI OCT. 27. Leaders of various political parties, including the Chief Minister and the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, have expressed grief over the demise of the Congress leader, Vazhapadi K.Ramamurthy.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said Mr. Ramamurthy, a veteran politician, was involved in the trade union movement and dedicated his life to the welfare of workers. As a Union Minister of Petroleum he proved his administrative skill and his death was a loss to his fellow trade union leaders. She expressed her condolence to the bereaved family.

The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, said he was distressed over the sudden death of Mr. Ramamurthy who, he said, had worked for the upliftment of the backward class people. Starting his political career in the Dravidian movement, he later joined the nationalist movement and exemplified himself in all fields he was associated.

The BJP State president, S. P. Kirubanidhi, said Mr. Ramamurthy was a good parliamentarian and spent most of his political career in the trade union movement.

The Union Minister of State for Shipping, S. Thirunavukkarasar, said Mr. Ramamurthy worked for the betterment of people of various sections.

The PMK leader, S. Ramadoss, said the senior Congress leader spent his lifetime for the public welfare.

Born in a farmer family Mr. Ramamurthy occupied various coveted posts, including the Union Minister and the TNCC president.

The State CPI secretary, R. Nallakannu, and the CPI (M) State secretary, N. Varadarajan, in their message described Mr. Ramamurthy as a veteran trade union leader.

The Puthiya Tamizhagam leader, K.Krishnasamy, the Makkal Tamil Desam president, S. Kannappan, the INL State president, A. M. Abdul Kader, the Indian Union Muslim League State president, K. A. Abdul Wahab, and the Nationalist Congress Party State president, G. P. Sarathy, among others offered their condolences.
