Revenue officials appeal to Jayalalithaa

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE Oct. 27. The Tamil Nadu Revenue Officials Association has appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to invite representatives of the Joint Action Council of the Tamil Nadu Teachers Associations and Employee Organisations-Government Employee Organisations (JACTTEO-GEO) for talks to end their strike.

K. Janardhanan, State vice-president, in a statement said the Government was not right in threatening the striking employees and teachers with action under the Essential Services Maintenance Act, while it was not making any attempt to solve their problems.

Encashment of surrendered leave was a concession given to government employees.

The Government had terminated the services of 12,500 people's welfare workers and 10,000 road workers.

Besides, 30,000 employees in the nutritious meal scheme were facing termination of their services.

As a result of computerisation, several posts in the registration, commercial taxes, revenue and treasury departments had been kept vacant. Thousands of employees of the above departments were likely to lose their jobs in the next three years.

The Government had decided to reduce the strength of village administrative officers (who are not participating in the strike) to one-eighth of the existing strength.

Referring to the threat of invoking the ESMA against striking employees, Mr. Janardhanan said the Government itself permitted its employees — right from ministers and IAS officers to the last grade servants — to resort to a one-day strike on October 9, in view of the State-sponsored bandh over the Cauvery issue. It also provided security for the recent agitation by members of the film industry in Neyveli.

``When the Government itself instilled a spirit of agitation in the minds of all categories of people including its employees, how is it proper to invoke ESMA against the same government employees who resorted to a strike to press for their demands,'' he asked.
