Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to the thought provoking article `Seizing the moment in J&K' by Malini Parthasarathy (Oct. 25). Undeniably, the Kashmiris have expressed their displeasure against the Farooq Abdullah regime. But as pointed out in the article, the elections are not a solution to the alienation of the Kashmiris arising out of the hardships and sufferings inflicted upon them by both militants and the security forces. National parties such as the Congress should value the goodwill of the people of the State as more important. It is gratifying that the Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf, has assured Mirwaiz Umar Farook that he will keep his hands off the Valley once the Hurriyat or other representatives of the Kashmiri people come to an agreement with India. Gen. Musharaff should exercise control over the militants so that the focus could be on putting the Kashmir dispute on the road to a settlement. The Congress and the People's Democratic Party should show such a political vision. H. Syed Mathani, Tiruchi, T.N.
