Do not judge him

Sir, — The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, was voted the best Chief Minister twice successively in a public poll.

He took personal interest in the development of information technology and bio-technology and it appeared that the whole world gravitated towards Bangalore. There was a significant improvement in governance and he chose people of merit and competence to man important departments.

However, after the Supreme Court passed severe strictures and after Mr. Krishna tendered an unconditional apology, even Congress workers have become critical of him.

When the interests of farmers were jeopardised, he found himself cornered. Add to this the fact that Karnataka has been at the receiving end of the inequity of the successive agreements of 1892 and 1924 and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's rhetoric. Yet Mr. Krishna invited her for talks. But she remained indifferent.

Later there was widespread protests in both the States. It was under these circumstances that Mr. Krishna announced his decision not to release water.

For defying the Supreme Court, he was ready to resign. Now that he has apologised, the matter should end.
