Storage up in reservoirs

CHENNAI NOV. 2. The combined storage of three city reservoirs has gone up by 600 mcft (million cubic feet), thanks to the latest rainspell.

This morning, the storage of Red Hills, Cholavaram and Satyamurthi Sagar in Poondi stood at 2,206 mcft and before the spell began it was 1,606 mcft.

The rise in the storage was equivalent to 25 days' supply at the current level of 400 million litres a day (MLD).

In Chembarampakkam, the storage stood at 570 mcft, which rose by 100 mcft in a day.

During October 29 to November 1, the average cumulative rainfall in the four storage points was 243 mm.

The individual rainfall recordings done at the storage points this morning were: Chembarampakkam - 48 mm, Cholavaram - 35 mm, Red Hills - 26 mm and Poondi - 24 mm. Besides, Tamaraipakkam and Zamin Korattur, contributing flows to Cholavaram and Chembarampakkam, received 49 mm and 27 mm respectively.

The groundwater table witnessed a substantial rise. In Besant Nagar, the level stood at 15 ft; in Villivakkam, K.K. Nagar and Kodambakkam 20 ft; in Nungambakkam, West Mambalam, Royapuram and Purasawalkam 15 ft and in Anna Nagar and Kilpauk, the level was 10 ft, according to a press release issued by Chennai Metrowater.

The Local Administration Minister, M. C. Sampath, inspected the rain-hit areas including Pulianthope, Kolathur, T. Nagar and Taramani. He was accompanied among others by the Deputy Mayor, `Karate' R. Thiagarajan, the Managing Director of Metrowater, M. Dheenadayalan, the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board, N. Balaganga, the R.K. Nagar MLA, P.K. Sekar Babu, and V. Thangavelu, Engineering Director of Metrowater.

The Minister also participated in a review meeting with heads of various government departments about the rain relief works and also measures to be taken in the future in the event of a heavy rainfall. Mr. Sampath inspected the mouths of the Cooum and Adyar rivers and asked officials to clear sandbars that had choked the mouths.

He instructed officials to expedite the desilting of the Mambalam Canal. He also directed them to initiate talks with Railway officials to take steps to clear the blocks that came in the way of flow of water adjacent to the MRTS at Velachery.
