Tatas kick-off fixed wireless service in T.Nadu

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI NOV. 9. Basic telecom service provider Tata Teleservices (TTSL) has kick-started its operations in Tamil Nadu circle with the launch of its fixed wireless services under the newly unveiled national brand — Tata Indicom.

The launch of service in Tamil Nadu circle comes even as TTSL is working overtime to get the right of way from the State Government for laying cables to begin fixed wire line service.

Addressing a press conference here today, Chairman of TTSL, J. J. Irani, said the company had approached the State Government a year ago seeking right of way for laying cables. Nothing had been heard from the Government on this front as yet, he added.

Unwilling to lose any more time in a competitive environment, TTSL has chosen to get into Tamil Nadu circle with a wireless solution, using local multiple distribution system (LMDS). TTSL has gone operational in Tamil Nadu circle with two offerings - fixed wireless and CDMA limited mobility.

The just unveiled national brand `Tata Indicom', it was explained, would become a pan India leader, an embodiment of friendly services in delivering complete telecom solutions. The Tata group has also launched a mascot for its brand. The mascot is the second one to be launched by the Tata group. It may be recalled that when Air-India was under its control in former times, the Tatas had launched the `Maharaja' mascot for the carrier. The TTSL mascot is set to represent a reliable, trustworthy, understanding, unpretentious and friendly companion to customers. The launch of Tata Indicom also signals the foray of Tata Teleservices into the branded telecommunications market. Tata Indicom will be the umbrella brand under which the company will launch its suite of voice and data products.

The Managing Director, S. Ramakrishnan, said as part of TTSL's Tamil Nadu operations, in phase I, the company would launch its services in over 25 markets in the State by mid-2003. The total investment in this circle would be about Rs. 1,184 crores over five years. It was hopeful of roping in over five million customers within the next five years.
