Presenting the award, Mr. Nair said that Fr. Vadakkan's leadership was needed in the present circumstances for helping the farming community. "Fr. Vadakkan always supported the cause of the farmers and even when he was in the anti-Communist front, he was ready to support the Amaravathi Satyagraha led by the Communist leader, A. K. Gopalan," he said. Presiding over the function, the Information Minister, M. M. Hassan, said Chummar had a responsible nature that would prompt him to come down heavily on those public persons who used to forget the poor.
