Call to develop future mechanisms

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 9. The pioneer of mechanisms in India, M.K. Abdul Majeed, has called for embarking on resources and development programmes for realising future mechanism for moon landing mission, intelligent mechanisms and mechanisms for bio-medical applications.

Mr. Abdul Majeed who was summarising the panel discussions on the 60 technical papers presented at the two-day Fourth National Seminar and Exhibition on Aerospace and Related Mechanisms here today wanted information to be disseminated properly in order to minimise duplication of research in the mechanisms area.

The societal implications of mechanisms were highlighted by the seminar.

The biomedical applications and advancements in mechanisms technology had reached the level of the use of a 5 m.m. robot in human internal organs for biopsy, repair and manipulation without surgery.

In his invited lecture, M.N. Satyanarayanan of Space Industries Development at ISRO HQ drew attention to the criticality of deployment of mechanisms and the need for concurrent engineering in the design of such systems.

K.S. Narayana Rao, general manager of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bangalore, Manjit Singh of BARC and V.C. Padaki of Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory, Bangalore, also gave invited lectures on mechanisms for vibration control in advanced light helicopter, indigenous development of handling tools and life supporting mechanisms for fighter aircrafts respectively.

In another invited lecture delivered on behalf of V.K. Saraswath, Director of Research Centre Imarat, further miniaturisations of pyro-based and conventional mechanisms for operational need of missile systems was highlighted.

In his keynote address delivered at the inaugural session N. Vedachalam, Director, LPSC of the ISRO dwelt on various complex mechanisms like the gyros which were designed to be rotating at a speed of 26,000 rpm continuously and survive for over 15 years in extreme space environment.
