It is likely to intensify further and move in a north northeasterly direction for some more time, skirting the coast, the Weather office here said. With the depression moving away, the sun shone over Chennai this morning, after a wet spell which lasted about a fortnight. Rainfall occurred at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and coastal Rayalaseema, coastal and south interior Karnataka. Sivaganga and Tiruppuvanam recorded 8 cm and 7 cm of rainfall respectively, for the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. today. The other chief amounts of rainfall reported during the same period were: Sulurpet-6 cm; Pamban, Madurai and Paramakudi-5 cm each, Nagercoil and Cholavaram-4 cm each. According to a weather bulletin issued here this evening, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Isolated heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur over north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours. Many parts of Tamil Nadu have received significant rainfall during the northeast monsoon, with the bulk of the rain coming during the past week or 10 days.
Mettur level
touches 67 ft.
Meanwhile, today's level at the Mettur dam stood at 67.710 ft., and the capacity at 30.768 tmcft. The inflow was 7,604 cusecs. For want of demand from the delta region, the discharge remained suspended.
