State has complied with SC order, says Patil

Bangalore Nov. 13. With two days to go for the Supreme Court to pronounce its verdict in the contempt of court case against the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, and others, Karnataka has more than complied with the court's orders on releasing Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu since October 28.

On October 28, the Supreme Court directed Karnataka to make available at the Mettur Dam in Tamil Nadu till November 6, 9,000 cusecs of water a day as directed by the Cauvery River Authority on September 8. From the early hours of November 7 till November 15 when the court takes up the contempt case, the release should be according to the stipulation of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal in its interim order of June 25, 1991, for the month of November, which works out to 6,000 cusecs a day.

The Minister for Water Resources, H.K.Patil, told presspersons that from October 28 till today, the State had made available at Mettur Dam 20.03 tmcft. or 1,72,484 cusecs of water.

From November 1, the State had made available 14.9 tmcft. of water. Of that, 5.8 tmcft. had been released from the reservoirs across the Cauvery in the State.

Mr. Patil said that from October 28 to November 6, the State had made available 0.8 tmcft. of water a day. The tribunal had laid down that in November, 16 tmcft. of water should be provided to Tamil Nadu.

"We have complied with the Supreme Court order", the Minister, who himself is a contemnor before the Supreme Court, said.

About the next meeting of the CRA, Mr. Patil said that there was no reply yet from the Centre to the Chief Minister's letter to the Prime Minister, A.B.Vajpayee, to convene a meeting of the authority and also that of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee.

To a question, the minister said that they had information that following rains, Tamil Nadu had stopped drawing water from the Mettur Dam (Stanley Reservoir).
