First day-night match at Ahmedabad

By Mohandas Menon

Ahmedabad is located in the western part of India, in the State of Gujarat. Founded in 1411 by Ahmed Shah, it is an important industrial and commercial centre, noted for its cotton textiles. It was the State capital during the 60s.

In 1983, the State government allotted a 50-acre land at Motera on the banks of river Sabarmati. The Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium, which was completed in a record time of about nine months, can accommodate around 50,000 spectators. Though floodlights were installed some time back, the India-West Indies encounter would be the first one-day international to be held here under lights.

Since October 1984, the venue has hosted nine LOI matches, with the home team winning four of the seven games it has played here. West Indies has figured in two and won both — by two runs (in 1988) and 70 runs (in 1993). Two World Cup encounters were also held here in 1987 and 1996.

Highest team score: India 306 for five in 50 overs v Zimbabwe on 5-12-00.

Lowest team score: India 100 in 28.3 overs against West Indies on 16-11-1993.

Best individual score: Sourav Ganguly 144 (152 balls) v Zimbabwe on 5-12-00.

Best bowling: Carl Hooper (West Indies) — three for nine in 4.3 overs v India on 16-11-1993.

Best bowling (fast bowler): Geoff Lawson (Australia) — three for 25 in 10 overs v India on 5-10-1984.

Overall aggregates: Batsmen: 3495 runs at an average of 25.33 runs per wicket; strike rate 67.75 runs per 100 balls.

Bowlers: 116 wickets with 37 of them (31.90 per cent) claimed by spinners.
