Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By K. Subramanian
A large number of people attending the grievances day and farmers meetings at the Collectorate find it difficult to make an urgent phone call, as the public telephone installed at the entrance of the Collectorate has gathered dust and remained in disuse for over a year. The BSNL, which has introduced and installed electronic public telephones with push button facility showing the dialled number in Chennai, other cities and major towns in the State, did not bother to keep the old, dialling system public telephone at the Collectorate here in working condition. As a result, the public are forced to go to public telephone booths maintained by private parties and pay more. Similarly, the public telephones at the Government hospitals in Kancheepuram and several places are also out of order. Enquiries with a top BSNL official revealed that some miscreants or vested interests used to damage the coin-box public telephones so that the public went to the nearby PCOs. The consumer forum here has appealed to the BSNL to provide the latest type of phones for its public telephones in more places and replace the existing old type of non-functional phones.
