In a letter to Mr. Vajpayee, she said that personally she had the greatest respect for the Prime Minister and had full confidence in him and in the Cauvery River Authority that he heads. She said she had no intention to make insinuations against him or the CRA and her remarks were only intended to improve the conditions of the farmers of Tamil Nadu when she had written the letter to him earlier this month. She urged Mr. Vajpayee to ignore the comments and treat them as withdrawn. During the hearing on the Cauvery issue on Friday, the apex court had expressed strong resentment over the "insinuations" levelled by Ms. Jayalalithaa in her letter to the Prime Minister on the functioning of the CRA and asked her to withdraw them in four days. Counsel for Tamil Nadu, K.K. Venugopal, immediately assured the court that the Chief Minister would write to the Prime Minister "soon" withdrawing the remarks against him and expressing confidence in him. PTI
