Putin praises BrahMos project

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW NOV. 19. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has praised the Indo-Russian BrahMos joint venture for the production of anti-ship missiles as a "successful venture with good prospects ahead." Visiting the NPO Mashinostroyenia aerospace company, the Russian partner in the BrahMos joint-venture, Mr. Putin said he was happy to see for himself the "accurate and high-quality execution" of Indian defence contracts ahead of his trip to India early next month. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile jointly developed by India and Russia will go into serial production in both countries next year.

The Itar-Tass news agency quoted the NPO Mashinostroyenia head, Gerbert Yefremov, as saying that the new anti-ship missile would have no match in the world for another 10 years. Mr. Putin promised Government support for efficient aerospace companies, such as NPO Mashinostroyenia. "We will definitely not be bottling Coca-Cola on these premises," he said referring to some botched experiments with converting Russian defence factories to unrelated civilian production.

Mr. Putin said the Government would provide enough funding for the aerospace industry, not only to stay afloat, but to develop.
