Mundy in lead

KOLKATA NOV. 19. Local golfer Uttam Singh Mundy carded a six-under 64 to lead the first round of the Royal Challenge Grand Prix golf held at the par-70 Tollygunge Club course here on Tuesday.

Defending champion Rafiq Ali carded a five-under 65 to remain close behind the day's leader. The local professional, who has yet to win a title after his triumph here last year, showed good form in starting his title defence.

Mundy made six birdies playing with confidence that he has gained from participating in the TCL Classic in China last week. Mukesh Kumar, who has five victories so far in the season, had mixed luck and was third alongside Ajay Gupta, Shamim Khan and Ali Sher.

The scores: Uttam Singh Mundy 64; Rafiq Ali 65; Mukesh Kumar, Shamim Khan, Ajay Gupta, Ali Sher 66; Indrajit Bhalotia, Rahul Ganapathy, Amritinder Singh, Ashok Kumar, Bhoop Singh 67; Naman Davar, Binod Pandey, Digvijay Singh, Sanjay Kumar, Yusuf Ali 68.
