Vishnu takes gold

HYDERABAD NOV. 19. Vishnu Chand of Kerala bagged a gold in the keenly fought men's 1500 metres race aptly called "Devil Take Hindmost'' on the inaugural day of the 56th Senior, 31st junior and 19th sub-junior cycling championship which got underway at the Cycling Velodrome in Osmania University here on Tuesday.

The 17-lap race was contested by seventeen cyclists from different states and at the end of each lap, the cyclist who finished last in the round, was eliminated. After such elimination, in the last round, two cyclists fought it out for the gold and Vishnu Chand emerged winner while Kamal Kiradu of Rajasthan finished runner up.

Incidentally in the last cycling nationals held at Bikaner also Vishnu Chand had won this event.

In the women's 1500 metre team time trial Railways put up a good show to take the gold. H. Ranjita Devi of Northern Railway set the pace for the initial stages and then Beena Kumari of South Eastern took over for two laps.

The last stage saw W. Bemcha Devi of Northern and Premlata of South Central share the lead, setting the pace for Railways to take the gold with a show of good teamwork.

Host AP got a bronze in the boys' under-18 1500 metre team time trial.

The results:

Men: 1500m (Devil Take Hindmost): 1. Vishnu Chand (Kerala); 2. Kamal Kiradu (Rajasthan); 3. Uttam Nale (Maharashtra).

1500m team time trial: 1. Punjab Police (Kulvir Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Sarabjit Singh and Sukhjinder Singh) 1m 45.40 secs; 2. Railway Sports Promotion Board (Ch. Premjit Singh, K. Indra Kumar Singh, K.H. Provin Singh and Fulbirth); 3. Punjab (Mehtab Singh Mann, Aminder Singh, Gurmeet Singh and Pavittar Singh).

Boys under 18: 1500m team time trial: 1. Manipur (O. Bikram Singh, K. Soman Singh, H.L. Singh, Devdutta Singh) 1m 52.30 secs; 2. Punjab (Gagandeep Singh, Mehtab Singh, Ramninder Singh, Abhishek Rana); 3. Andhra Pradesh (Ch. Sai Krishna, Udale Clark, Srinivas and C. Rayudu).

Boys under 16: 1500m team time trial: 1. Punjab (R. Singh, Abhishek Rana, Sarpreet Singh and Amandeep Singh) 1m 56.53 secs; 2. Rajasthan (Rajendra Bishnoi, Radhakishan, Daylaram Saran and Daylaram Jat); 3. Manipur (H. Jayanta Singh, K. Pinky Singh, Sanjit Kumar and N. Jayanta Singh).

Women: 1500m team time trial: 1. Railway Sports Promotion Board (H. Ranjita Devi, O. Beena Kumari, W. Bemcha Devi and Premlata Surevan) 2m 3.82secs; 2. Kerala (Rajni V., Sandhya R., Anitha Andrews and Soumya T.V.); 3. Maharashtra (Lonari P. Rajshri Kadam, M. Shinde and Dipali Nikam).

Girls under-18: 1500m team time trial: 1. Maharashtra (L.Jadhav, L.Pratima, Rajsri Kadam and M. Shinde) 2m 15.49 secs; 2. Andaman and Nicobar (Purni, Drusilla, Elizabeth and Gashti); 3. Punjab (Gurpeet Kaur, Jaspreet Kaur, Roop Kaur and Manjyot Kaur).
