Golden double for Madras

MADURAI NOV. 19. It was a golden double for Madras University as its men and women clinched the titles in the all-India inter-University chess tournament, conducted by Madurai Kamaraj University, here on Tuesday.

While the men regained the title and the Karan Singh Trophy after two years, the women retained the title.

The men's team, comprising International Master Sundararajan Kidambi, M.R. Venkatesh, Ram S. Krishnan and Preetham Sharma, emerged winner in style with an unbeaten record, leading all the way, with a round to spare. The team drew 2-2 with Visweswariah Technological University, Belgaum for a total of 30 points and Visweswariah finished second tallying 25 points and Gujarat University finished third with 24.5 points.

The women's team comprising Lakshmi Priya, Rajalakshmi, Kavitha and Y. Prathiba, put up a still better performance, emerging winner with a round to spare and finished in style in the seventh and final round with an unbeaten record, leading all the way. The team totalled 27 points in 28 games (men 30 points from 36 games - 9 rounds).
