This Day That Age
In a letter to the Editor, a reader using the nom de plume "A Rasika", wrote. "While the purpose of the Aradhana at the shrine in Tiruvaiyaru is to pay homage to Saint Thyagaraja by singing his kritis, one misses the significance of the occasion by pleading on behalf of those who resort to much swara singing. Not only swaras, but varnams, thanams and pallavis come inside the elastic bounds of pure music. But during an Aradhana, the Bhajana mode is most appropriate. Musicians and music-lovers go to the Saint's resting place to offer their homage by rendering the kritis, which came out from his heart as a spontaneous overflow of bhakthi.
