Kulbir sets National record

By Our Special Correspondent

Kulbir Singh of Punjab Police (centre), who set a National record in the men's 1000m time trial at the National cycling championship in Hyderabad on Wednesday, shares a lighter moment with his coaches Jarnail Singh (left) and Kanwarjit Singh.

HYDERABAD NOV. 20. Kulbir Singh of Punjab Police created a new National record clocking 1m 10.45s in the 1000 metres time trial for men in the 56th senior, 31st junior and 19th sub-junior National cycling championship here today. The old record stood in his own name at 1:10.64 created in 1999.

Tall and lanky 24-year-old Kulbir Singh has won several medals in National meets and National Games and was confident of putting up a good show here after having put in rigorous practice for several weeks in Patiala.

Kerala lifted two golds as Rejani won the 500 metres time trial for women with a time of 40.08 seconds and Soumya T.V. got the gold in the 500 metres time trial for girls under 18.

Rejani, a 19-year-old student of S.N. College, Thiruvananthapuram, is a former under-18 National champion.

Talking to the media she stated that she was confident of getting the gold here since she had put up good timings in her practice workouts.

Soumya, the other lass from Kerala to win a gold is a plus two student from Thiruvananthapuram and has been cycling since the last six years. At the previous National, held in Bikaner, she had got the silver in the 500m time trial for girls under 18 and at the road cycling National in Belgaum earlier this year she had bagged the gold in the 30km road race.

Kerala coach Mr. Chandran was confident that the State would get a few more medals. He said the Kerala squad had come to Hyderabad with a strong line-up in the women's and girls' categories.

Sukhjiner Singh of Punjab Police won the gold in the 500m time trial for boys under 18. Sukhjinder is among the top ranked junior cyclists in the country and had won the gold last time in the same event.

However, the Bikaner track was a 500m track and not the standard 333.33m track which is available at Hyderabad.

Punjab Police coach Mr. Kanwarjit Singh said the track at the newly constructed velodrome here was a good and very fast one and this would help in creation of new records.
