Dempo's dream run continues

Margao Nov. 20. Dempo's dream run continued as it beat local champion Salgaocar 2-1 to score its second successive victory in the seventh edition of the National Football League at Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday.

After a barren and listless first half, Dempo scored the goals through Medio Lazarus Fernandes (64th) and substitute Ratan Singh (73rd), while Salgaocar reduced the margin through Denis Cabral (71st).

Dempo, which earlier beat Vasco 1-0, now has six points from two matches, while Salgaocar has one point after drawing with Churchill.

There was not much thrill in the first half, despite Salgaocar probing into the rival area. Sunday Seah failed to find the target thrice.

However, introduction of striker Francis Silveira in the second half in place of Coulur Sergey Andreev, who played his first match today, saw the match swing in Dempo's way as the team made inroads into the rival half with Lazarus Fernandes keeping the upfront busy.

Dempo surged ahead in the 64th minute when Fernandes, who got a through pass from Jose Colaco, put the ball into the net over the goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey's head.

Chaubey, who hesistated in coming out, collided with Fernandes, forcing the Dempo striker to leave the field with an injured leg.

After conceding the goal, Salgaocar regrouped and eight minutes later restored parity. Dennis Cabral, who received a chip in the rival box from Bungo Singh, sneaked in with the ball before defender Melvin Rodrigues could get to it and slotted the ball into the net.

But hardly had the cheers died down, when Dempo roared with a gem of a goal. Substitute Ratan Singh, who came in place of injured Lazarus, accepting a pass from Francis Silveira uncorked a scorching 20-yard drive that kept 'keeper Chaubey rooted to his ground to give Dempo full points.
