Pondicherry
By Our Staff Reporter
Pondicherry, Nov. 20. The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, today asked the management of a privately-run sugar mill here to remit to banks the loan amount due from farmers, as the amount had already been deducted from the payment for cane supplied to the mill. He said the farmers would always be at liberty to repay bank loans straightway without routing it through the mill management. Talking to presspersons here, he referred to the plight of the farmers not being able to get fresh loan when earlier dues remained unpaid and said that the farmers could take the appropriate route to secure justice. On the steps to get the fishermen of Kottuchery, near Karaikal, released from the Sri Lankan Navy's custody, he said he had already taken up the issue with the Centre and hoped that the fishermen would be released at the earliest. Ten fishermen of Karaikal were held by the Sri Lankan navy in the last week of October when they reportedly strayed into the Sri Lankan coastal limits while fishing. On the plea of the registered contractors of the PWD for appointing a full- fledged Chief Engineer for the department, he said steps had been taken to have an official through the UPSC .The post was not vacant now as a Secretary of the Pondicherry Administration had been assigned the additional charge.
Car given to prize winner
The Chief Minister handed over the key of a Maruti car to Srinivasan from Panruti who won the car as a bumper prize in the small savings investment scheme operated by the Department of Planning and Research. Prizes for investors were announced as part of the department's efforts to mobilise small savings. The prize scheme envisaged incentives to attract depositors in the savings scheme through the post office. The Union Territory mobilised Rs. 121.14 crores during 2001-2002 against Rs. 27.75 crores in 1998-99.
