According to the Superintendent of Police, P.S.R.Anjaneyulu, at least 20 to 25 naxalites thronged the railway station between 1.30 am and 1.45 am. The police were suspecting that at least four to five of them could be women. Information reaching the district headquarters suggested that 10 of them were carrying weapons. The naxalites called out the Assistant Station Master, Omar Basha, and his assistant and informed them that they came to blow up the station. The naxalites took the station crew and residents in the nearby railway quarters to a distance and posted a guard there. Later, they fixed detonators and blasted the station. The naxalites reportedly said that their action was in protest against the recent Chandrajupalem encounter. It is said that a naxalite, claiming to be Sagar, commander of the Krishnapatti area committee of the PW, called up Piduguralla and Nadikude railway stations and informed officials that the Tummalacheruvu railway station was blown up and that trains should not be sent on that route. Many trains were delayed or diverted via Vijayawada while some train services were cancelled.
