Kingpin of callgirl racket nabbed

By Our Staff Reporter

MADURAI NOV. 20. In a significant breakthrough, the city police nabbed Ashok, the kingpin of an inter-State callgirl racket, in Madurai today.

Based on the information given by a woman of Bangalore, who was found roaming in the Integrated bus stand here this morning, that she escaped from the custody of Ashok after a tormenting experience, a special police team led by the Tallakulam ACP, Hema Karunakaran, launched a manhunt to nab the culprit.

The Bangalore-based accused, who sensed trouble and tried to sneak into a hideout in the city, was cornered on the Gandhi Museum Road.

He offered resistance and attacked the police with a knife, causing minor injuries, before he was apprehended.

According to police sources, Ashok had "forced'' and "lured'' several girls into the flesh trade, some of whom were rescued by the police in Tuticorin and Madurai districts recently. He had a wide network of middlemen in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

His `modus operandi' was to attract girls with his team of "handsome youth''. Once trapped, the girls were exploited on promise of easy money through lucrative jobs.

The girls were then threatened or blackmailed with photographs and sent to other States.

Two such girls from Bangalore, came in contact with Rajamani in Madurai who was arrested by the police early this week.

Narrating her tale of woe, one of the girls told the investigators that she was made to starve, tortured and detained in dark rooms for days when she initially refused to `oblige'. She was then kept in a private guest house near Madurai and forced to entertain some persons.

The police have seized some diaries from the accused, including Ganapathy Nadar and Rajamani of Madurai, which contain the telephone and mobile numbers of influential clients.

The Commissioner of Police, M.V.N. Surya Prasad, said the accused (Ashok) was in habit of kidnapping girls and using them for the flesh trade.

"He has widespread links with brokers all over the South and supplies girls on contract basis,'' he added.

Meanwhile, in continuation of the crackdown on the flesh trade, the police raided a house in Poriyalar Nagar in the city outskirts on Wednesday and arrested four persons, including two girls.
