Hurriyat to continue talks with Kashmir Committee

SRINAGAR NOV. 20 The Hurriyat leader and JKLF chairman, Yaseen Malik, today stood isolated as the 23-party amalgam decided to continue talks with the Kashmir Committee, led by the former Union Law Minister, Ram Jethmalani, on the Kashmir issue tomorrow, despite strong opposition from Mr. Malik who was recently released from jail. Mr. Malik, a member of the Hurriyat's executive body, walked out of its meeting midway after his disagreement with other members of the separatist conglomerate, amalgam sources said.

The meeting, which lasted for over three hours, was called to discuss the future strategy of talks with the Kashmir Committee in the wake of Mr. Malik's recent charge that Mr. Jethmalani was adopting double standards. The Executive, barring Mr. Malik, favoured continuing talks with the Committee leading to a walkout by Mr. Malik.

The sources said Mr. Malik tried in vain to impress upon his colleagues to realise the ``ulterior motives'' of the Committee. The meeting discussed the changing scenario in the State following the change of Government. In a statement after the meeting, the Hurriyat said its stand about the functioning of the local police was vindicated following the revelations by a counter-insurgent-turned-National Conference Legislative Council member, Javid Hussain Shah.
