The project includes the construction of a building equipped with a duster unit and other facilities for food processing and distribution. Training facilities will also be introduced in the first phase of the project. The outlay for the industries sector proposes infrastructure development for another mini industrial estate to be set up in the city. The project is estimated to cost Rs.1.5 crores. A sum of Rs.20 lakhs has been earmarked for a computer manufacturing unit to be set up in the Thiruvallam-Attipra zone. An offset printing machine will be installed in the Reprographic Centre situated in the Corporation office at a cost of Rs.8 lakhs. In the IT sector, the Plan document has allocated Rs.1.5 crores for the computerisation of the Corporation and networking with zonal offices. The registration of births and deaths and the Revenue section would be taken up for computerisation in the first phase of the project named City Friends to be implemented in 2002-'03. A sum of Rs.50 lakhs has been earmarked for preparation of a GIS (Geological Information System) map of the city. The Corporation will host and maintain a Web site at a cost of Rs.25 lakhs. A sum of Rs.20 lakhs will be spent on upgrading the computer hardware centre to a production unit. The project document proposes the construction of decorative arches at the six entry points to the city. These arches, to be constructed in the traditional style of architecture, will depend on sponsorships from business establishments, industrial houses and public sector units. The project is estimated to cost Rs.1 lakh. In the Town Planning sector, the Plan includes a Rs.80-lakh project for modernisation of the East Fort area. This work involves relocation of the bus stand, construction of a new bus bay and a private bus stand and a shopping complex. An amount of Rs.1 crore has been set apart for construction of foot overbridges and parking lots along the MG road. Renovation of the public parks is expected to cost Rs.10 lakhs. As many as 64 projects will be taken up for modernisation of markets. The Thrikkannapuram-Mudavanmugal drinking water project has been allocated Rs.30 lakhs for construction of a treatment plant and reservoir and a network of pipes. A sum of Rs.35 lakhs has been set apart for a project to improve the water supply in the city by installing bigger pipes and expanding the network. Rainwater harvesting gets an allocation of Rs.5 lakhs. In the health sector, the project document proposes the improvement of facilities in Government hospitals. The second phase of the Clean City Green City programme has been allocated Rs.10 lakhs while the garbage processing plant at Vilappilsala will be provided with additional land, approach roads and a green belt at a cost of Rs.20 lakhs. Another Rs.20 lakhs will be utilised to streamline the garbage collection mechanism. As many as 120 projects wil be taken up under the slum improvement programme. The Plan proposals include an outlay of Rs.15 lakhs to set up public comfort stations for women at East Fort, Secretariat, Thampanoor, Sanghumukhom, Palayam, Medical College, Veli, Chalai, Manacaud and Karamana and Rs.30 lakhs for a women's production centre at Perunthanni. In the Energy sector, the Plan document has set apart Rs.20 lakhs for installation of solar water heaters and compact flourescent lamps in hospitals under the Corporation. A sum of Rs.13.25 crores has been allocated for public works in the 81 wards.
