Four Indian nationals involved in the illegal practice have been arrested. The police yesterday raided a three-storey house at Naxal, near the police headquarters here, where the gambling parlour was in operation. The four, including one person, Ashok Sharma, were caught red-handed, as they were accepting bets on the sixth one-day international cricket match between India and West Indies at Jodhpur, the inspector of the Kathmandu District Police Office, Hari Bahadur Malla, said. Those apprehended were being interrogated to probe the nexus between the Nepalese and Indian gamblers, he added. Gambling is illegal under Nepalese law. Mr. Malla said they were yet to arrest the ringleader, Jugal Aggrawal, an Indian citizen. Police sources said that the group was involved in betting on international cricket matches and the amount at stake often was as high as Rs. two lakhs. The bookies used modern communication facilities including computers, mobile phones and video cassettes for betting and the winners were promptly paid, in their country of residence.
