Indian help for Afghan education

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 22. The Indian hand in the effort to rebuild Afghanistan will be extended in the realm of education also. An assurance to this effect was given here today to the Afghan Minister of Education and Advisor on Internal National Security Affairs, Yonus Qanooni, by the Union Minister for Human Resource Development (HRD), Murli Manohar Joshi.

As a first step, the Government will send a team of officials from the Ministries of HRD and Science & Technology to Afghanistan to study the grassroots requirements.

In addition, the officials of the two Ministries will have detailed discussions with Afghan embassy officers to work out a framework for assistance in rebuilding the education network in the country.

While seeking comprehensive and wide-ranging Indian assistance in education, Mr. Qanooni made some specific demands, including English language teachers, scholarships for Afghan students in India and textbooks.

Dr. Joshi said prior to sending the English teachers to Afghanistan, they would be sensitised towards the customs and practices of the country.

Though nothing concrete was offered on the request for scholarships, Dr. Joshi said textbooks of the National Open School — which are also brought out in Urdu — could be made available.

Should the textbooks be acceptable to the Afghans, India would be willing to print them in bulk at a much lower cost.
