This marks the beginning of a new series of launches as part of the Middle Atmospheric Dynamics Science (MIDAS) research programme, which has the potential of unravelling many aspects of the Indian monsoon and weather. The Indian Space Research Organisation has developed a series of sounding rockets, RH-200, RH-300 and RH-560, which are regularly used for scientific experiments. G. Madhavan Nair, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, inaugurated the first rocket launch under the MIDAS programme. The programme consists of an elaborate observational programme for regular measurement of atmospheric temperatures and winds using balloons, ground-based radars and laser instruments.
