Map exchange on LAC to be discussed in Jan.

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI Nov. 22. The exchange of maps in the western sector of the Line of Actual Control will be discussed at the next meeting of the Indian and Chinese Experts Group in Beijing in January 2003, the Foreign Office spokesman announced today. No maps had been exchanged in the contentious Western sector yet, he said in response to questions. The exchange of maps in the Middle sector had also taken a long time. ``These are complicated issues and we are approaching this in a constructive manner,'' the spokesman said a day after the 14th meeting of the Joint Working Group on the boundary question. Asked whether India had proposed dates for a visit by the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to China, he said that the dates were "under discussion.'' In a statement, the spokesman said a detailed review of bilateral relations between India and China since the 13th meeting of the JWG on July 31, 2001, took place on Thursday. ``Both sides also viewed the functioning of the existing dialogue mechanisms such as on counter-terrorism and security. The usefulness of these dialogues and need to sustain and broaden them was re-affirmed.'' Regional issues were also discussed and China said it did not see relations with India simply from a South Asian perspective.
