Gujarat riots: Cong. promises special courts

By Our Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD NOV. 28. A "riot-free Gujarat'' where the people will be able to live in "peace, prosperity, happiness and security'' and special courts or inquiry commissions to try the communal riot and the cooperative bank scam cases have been promised by the Congress in its election manifesto for the December 12 Assembly elections.

The AICC general secretary, Kamal Nath, who is in charge of Gujarat affairs, released the manifesto here today in the presence of the State unit president, Shankarsinh Waghela, his predecessor, Amarsinh Chaudhary, and other leaders.

Even while asserting that "development and progress'' would be the key campaign theme, the manifesto in its preamble itself made repeated reference to the Godhra train carnage and the post-Godhra riots to attack the ruling BJP of generating communal passion.

``Gujarat is sick of the Government which aided and abetted the perpetrators of the carnage. Gujarat wants a government of all the people, a government which maintains peace and harmony, and not a government that provokes communal outrages and seeks to take political advantage of inflamed passion,'' it said.

Mr. Waghela said one of the first acts of the Congress, if the people voted it to power, would be to appoint special courts or constitute inquiry commissions to try the criminal cases connected with the communal riots which the BJP Government "had sought to push under the carpet".

The cooperative bank scams, which had affected some 70 lakh small depositors and "mostly involved the BJP leaders", would also be inquired into. The "massive irregularities'' committed by the BJP Government in the rehabilitation of the earthquake-hit and the removal of debris would also be probed.
