By Our Special Correspondent
Talking to presspersons, the chairman of the cell, Gangadhar, said the Government which created a hype on issues like telemedicine and AIDS w as in fact not doing anything useful to people. Basic facilities were being deprived and people, particularly the poor, were languishing unable to bear the cost of treatment for any ailment or illness. Dr. Gangadhar said deaths due to lack of medicare were increasing in the rural areas but such tragedies went unnoticed, he said. The Government had its priorities wrong and real problems dogging the sector were not being taken care of. The Government was being careless in sanctioning more and more medical colleges without creating a mechanism to enforce teaching standards. On the other hand, imposing user charges on patients was atrocious and it must be withdrawn immediately. He said medicare in the tribal areas must be stepped up and all tribal areas covered properly.
