The Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), and member of the Atomic Energy Commission, V.K. Chaturvedi, flagged-off the generator at a function held at the BHEL premises. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Chaturvedi commended the efforts of the BHEL staff for manufacturing the maiden nuclear steam generator of the country in a professional manner, overcoming various difficulties and making the delivery within the scheduled time. Dr. Chaturvedi said the NPCIL was on the threshold of big business in the next couple of decades and called for support from the BHEL in its endeavours. The Executive Director of the BHEL, A.K. Mathur, said, since the BHEL established the production of boilers with the available technology in the 1960s, it has come a long way. The BHEL successfully commenced its journey in the highly technical field of nuclear power programme by experimenting the manufacture of nuclear power equipments in 1970s. The BHEL mastered this art and managed to satisfy the needs of the NPCIL for a majority of the 220 MWe nuclear power stations in the country. Soon the NPCIL selected the BHEL for designing its large nuclear generators too. ``The BHEL's journey towards excellence in the manufacture of nuclear power equipments will be a continuing process,'' he added. Mr. Mathur said, the steam generator was designed, manufactured and tested according to the norms of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Also, it met the various operational requirements of customers' specifications. The General Manager, Nuclear, BHEL, M. Namasivayam, in his welcome address, said, the NPCIL had placed the order for four nuclear steam generators and the work on the other three were progressing at a fast pace. All effective steps had been taken for despatching these generators too as per the delivery schedule. The General Manager, Quality, BHEL, K.V. Muthukrishnan, handed over the PSI documents to the Director, Procurement, NPCIL, A.B. Ghare.
