Rain likely to continue

CHENNAI DEC. 7. Several parts of the State received heavy rainfall last night and this morning.

Tiruvarur, located in the central belt, recorded the highest amount of 18 cm during the 24 hours ending at 8-30 a.m. today. Chidambaram registered 15 cm, Cuddalore 11 cm and Pondicherry, Mayiladuthurai and Maduranthagam 10 cm each.

According to the Meteorological office, a trough of low pressure persists and extends from the Gulf of Mannar to the southwest bay off the coast of Tamil Nadu. Rain is likely to occur at many places of the State and the Union Territory on Sunday.

In the northern belt, Cuddalore and Kancheepuram were the major beneficiaries of this rainfall. The spell came as a relief to residents of Pondicherry, Cuddalore and Vellore, who did not benefit much by the ongoing northeast monsoon. In this season, up to the week ending December 4, Cuddalore recorded a minus 33 per cent (actual: 463 mm and normal: 688 mm), Vellore minus 32 per cent (209 mm and 308 mm) and Pondicherry minus 24 per cent (545 mm and 716 mm).

The heavy rain in Vandavasi, one of the catchment areas contributing to the Maduranthagam tank, was expected to bring in more inflows to the tank, whose storage, till recently, did not cross even the one-fifth of the capacity of about 800 mcft. The increased storage of the tank would, officials said, attract birds to the Vedanthangal lake on the foreshore of the Maduranthagam tank.

The latest rain in and around Chidambaram and Cuddalore would lead to increased flows to the Veeranam tank, which touched full level already but was getting depleted due to release of water to ryots for farming operations.
