MCD launches water harvesting project

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI DEC. 7. To give a major thrust to rain water harvesting and prevent ground water levels from going down further, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has launched a water harvesting project in its buildings.

To begin with, the civic body has identified 367 buildings of municipal primary schools and community halls to carry out water harvesting in their premises.

Senior MCD officials said works for creating necessary infrastructure has already been completed in 177 buildings and is in progress at another 23 places. "For the remaining buildings, works are at various stages of award,'' officials said. Most of these buildings are in Central, South, Najafgarh, Karol Bagh and Sadar Pahar Ganj Zone.

A high-level meeting was recently held at Town Hall to review the progress of the water harvesting project. The Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, has directed officials to identify more buildings in their area. "The ultimate objective should be to bring all MCD buildings under rain water harvesting project,'' he said. "Every new building that comes up now should have the provision of rain water harvesting,'' he directed.

It is understood that the MCD Slum Department is planning to launch rain water harvesting project in a big way. The focus would be on the hundreds of community toilet complexes being constructed by it under the Yamuna Action Plan.

Officials are also exploring the possibility of having rainwater harvesting at Town Hall. " This is a huge building. A lot of water is wasted every year. This could be used for increasing the ground water level here,'' officials said.
